Some people leave a mark on the world through titles and accolades. Ms. Lauree Bowden left hers through something far more powerful — an open door, an open table, and an open heart.
She was the kind of woman the whole community called by name — and meant it with love. Whether you were family by blood, family by marriage, or simply someone who had wandered into her orbit and never quite left, Ms. Shang claimed you. She had a gift for making everyone feel like they belonged to something — because in her world, they did.
Her mornings could find her at the water's edge, fishing pole in hand, quiet and patient — because Ms. Shang knew that what she pulled from that water would feed more than just herself. Those fish fries became the stuff of legend. Friends, family, neighbors, and strangers would gather around her table, plates full and spirits lifted, surrounded by laughter and the kind of warmth that only comes when someone truly means it when they say everyone is welcome here.
If you were hungry, she fed you. If you needed your hair done, she sat you down and took care of you — understanding that tending to a person's appearance was an act of dignity. If you needed someone to talk to, she listened without judgment and spoke words that stayed with you long after you walked out her door. Encouraging. Constant. Unwavering.
But Ms. Shang's ministry didn't stop at her front door or her kitchen table. She carried that same spirit into the church, where she served faithfully as a missionary — both within the walls of the church and out in the broader community. As choir director, she led voices, lifted spirits, and pointed people toward something greater than their circumstances. Her faith wasn't something she kept to herself. It showed up in everything she did and everyone she touched.
And her children — both by birth and by the beautiful bonds of marriage that expanded her family — knew her love intimately. She poured into her children and grandchildren with intention and tenderness, encouraging them, pushing them forward, and reminding them of their worth in ways that shaped who they became. The additional children and grandchildren who came through marriage were never treated as additions — they were simply hers, fully and completely.
She was a neighborhood mom, a community pillar, a faithful servant, a missionary, a choir director, a fisherwoman, a cook, a counselor, and a cheerleader — all wrapped into one extraordinary woman who never once thought she was doing anything special. To her, it was simply love. It was simply who she was.
Her legacy is not silent. It lives in every life she touched, every meal she cooked, every song she led, every child she encouraged, and every person who walked away from her presence standing a little taller than when they arrived.
"Shang's Safe Haven LLC was founded to carry her spirit into the world — to be for this generation exactly what she was for so many. A safe place. A warm welcome. A hand reaching out instead of turning away. A home."
